iHV Project: Supporting Black Women’s Health Between Pregnancies
The Institute of Health Visiting (iHV) is a UK organisation which helps health visitors give high-quality care to families. With funding from The Burdett Trust for Nursing, the iHV is launching a new project to better support Black women’s health between pregnancies.
What the Project hopes to achieve
- Increase health visitors’ knowledge of the challenges faced by Black women.
- Help health visitors feel confident talking about health in a culturally sensitive way.
- Improve support for Black women in areas such as promoting health and well-being,
- planning future pregnancies, sexual health and contraception.
- Help Black women to know when to seek help and where to find it.
- Train health visitors on how they can provide more culturally tailored service improvements
- with Black families.
- Build leadership skills so health visitors can continue supporting Black women’s long-term
- health.
Listening to Black Women
A key part of the project is hearing directly from Black women about:
- The challenges they face
- What support they currently get
- What support they need or wish they had.
We are hoping to hold up to 3 initial online insight groups, reaching up to 20 Black women. These will be followed by a further 2 workshops one online and one face to face with 8 Black women who are mothers to inform the project and help to create training and resources based on the experiences of Black women. The project is being overseen by an advisory group which includes a range of people, including Black women with lived experience.
We’re looking for Black women who are mothers and community leaders to help run the insight groups and workshops groups. We would remunerate those who take part for their contribution based on the activities you are involved in. For the insight groups, we have £150 per session and for the workshops £250 total plus travel costs for the face-to-face workshop in London.
