WINTER PREPAREDNESS RESOURCES
As we continue into the winter months, we highlight some helpful resources and support available on winter preparedness. Please do share with your communities.
Every year, the London Communities Emergencies Partnership (LCEP) hosts a winter preparedness workshop to help charities and community groups prepare for the colder months. This year, the workshop was organised alongside the London Boroughs Faiths Network. With speakers from the Met Office, UK Health Security Agency, Age UK London, British Red Cross, Greater London Authority and more, you can watch the presentation and access additional resources here.
LCEP also has a bank of cold weather resources, from Cold Health Alerts to supporting vulnerable people, on their Climate Hub.
We’d like to once again share the Met Office’s WeatherReady bank of articles dedicated to specific potential issues arising from severe weather, including what to do in a flood and how to get your home and property winter ready.
Additionally, the GLA also has a Cost of Living Hub, which contains helpful information around managing increases in fuel costs, family childcare and food support, and much more.
N10 GAS OUTAGE RESPONSE
Earlier this month a gas outage in the N10 postcode area happened, affecting just over 3000 properties. Below you will find a summary of the response carried out by Cadent Gas, LCEP partners and British Red Cross. With over 500 customers on their priority service register identified within the outage area, Cadent Gas, working alongside Affinity Water, completed initial door-knocking of residents to distribute practical items and welfare checks.
The voluntary, community and faith sectors supported the response with ongoing welfare checks and return visits door-to-door of affected households. The Freehold Community Centre was set up by Cadent as the operations hub and welfare point for residents.
Voluntary, community and faith partners were present from Monday 13th until Friday 24th January covering two shifts daily (with minor gaps) from 0900-1500 and then 1500-2000.
We would like to thank partners involved, including British Red Cross, RE:ACT Disaster Response, Muswell Hill Synagogue, SGI-UK Buddhists, Crouch End Chavurah, and the London Boroughs Faiths Network.

THE MAYOR’S LOVED & WANTED CAMPAIGN
On Friday 14th February, the Mayor of London will be launching his Loved and Wanted campaign. The past year has been a difficult one with national and global events impacting many Londoners. The Loved and Wanted campaign has been developed to reaffirm our city’s values of diversity, unity and inclusion, and to show all communities that London is, and always will be, a place where everyone is welcome. This week we are reaching out to trusted partners in the Resilience sector to request your support in getting the message into every corner of the city.
We can provide you with window stickers (see image below) to demonstrate that your organisation is a welcoming space, postcards that can be used to send positive messages and can be distributed at workshops and events, or digital assets that can be shared on your social media channels.
If you would like to request any of these materials, please fill out this form and our Marketing team will arrange delivery free of charge: https://forms.office.com/e/xvrNNXDu1k

BRITISH RED CROSS’ FLOOD RISK REPORT
British Red Cross has published a new report Vulnerability and Resilience; Public awareness and perceptions of flood risk in the UK. The findings reveal public experiences and attitudes towards flooding, including perceptions of risk, early warning services, preparedness, the impact of flooding and the availability of support.
Key insights include:
- Two thirds of UK adults believe that flooding is getting worse in the UK,
- 1 in 6 people have experienced flooding, rising to 1 in 5 living in the most deprived areas,
- 1 in 8 people report that they are uninsured against flooding, rising to 24% of people in the most deprived areas,
- Only 1 in 5 who have experienced flooding have taken steps to adapt their home for flooding
- Just 9% from the lowest income households are signed up to receive flood warnings, compared to 31% of the highest income households
You can read the full report here.
THE MET OFFICE TRAINING
Following the success of last year, The Met Office will be running a series of training courses for community partners. These courses include information on the Met Office’s products and services, understanding of summer weather hazards, and on climate change risks.
Attached to this email is the prospectus for the courses. You can also visit the Met Office’s website.
GREAT MENTAL HEALTH DAY 2025
Friday 31 January 2025 is Great Mental Health Day, an awareness day with the aim of getting Londoners talking about their mental health and, importantly, raise awareness about the support and services that are available all year round.
How you can get involved with Great Mental Health Day:
- Help to spread the word. Explore the Supporter’s Pack and communications toolkit for social media copy, logos and more.
- Use the day to promote the local services and support available for Londoners. In previous years, the use of #GreatMentalHealth across social media by local services and organisations has allowed Londoners to find out more about the support available to them.
- Tell us who you would like to spotlight so we can feature them on the Great Mental Health Day interactive map.
- Signpost to free online training offers and resources. We want to encourage Londoners to access a range of free training and support offers available to them. You can access these via the Thrive LDN website and we've collated key resources into one place.
- Take the Zero Suicide Alliance’s free, online suicide prevention training to learn how to approach conversations around mental health and suicide.
To mark the day, Good Thinking, London’s free digital wellbeing service are also hosting a webinar to raise awareness about the wide range of free, online resources available to support Londoners in looking after their own mental health and wellbeing. You can find out more and register for the event here.
