GLA_logo.pngLondon Resilience Update - October 2024

Welcome to the October 2024 London Resilience Update. Happy Diwali to all those who are celebrating today!

On the horizon for November, we have Interfaith Week happening from 10-17 November, followed closely by London Flood Awareness Week happening from 18-24 November.

Please use hashtag #LDNFloodAware in any posts on social media for London Flood Awareness Week. These will be useful to share through your networks and we’ll also be posting through the @LDN_Environment X account, which we would appreciate amplification. There are also resources available on basement flooding, as well as National Flood Forum’s checklist and action plan. The Environment Agency has produced a pack of assets which can also be used, which you can access here.

We’re delighted to welcome Louisa Cavell to the team in the newly established Communications Coordinator role in the London Resilience Unit. She has worked across lots of different areas of the GLA previously, including Good Growth, Economic Development, the London Recovery Programme and Operation London Bridge. Please do reach out to her on Louisa.Cavell@london.gov.uk for a coffee and catch-up.

This update includes information on:

  • Winter preparedness resources including our upcoming webinar.
  • Ongoing support and resources on the situation in Lebanon, Israel and Gaza.
  • Resources to support communities in the wake of the summer riots.
  • Potential funding opportunities.
  • Upcoming events including free training.

WINTER PREPAREDNESS

As we head further into the winter months, we highlight some helpful resources available to support winter preparedness. Please share with your stakeholders and make sure to join our online Winter Preparedness Webinar for community partners on 14th November 10am-11.30am.

The Met Office’s WeatherReady has a bank of articles dedicated to specific potential issues arising from severe weather, including what to do in a flood and how to get your home and property winter ready.

The GLA also has a Cost of Living Hub, which contains helpful information around managing increases in fuel costs, family childcare and food support, and much more.

ONGOING SUPPORT FOR THOSE AFFECTED BY THE SITUATION IN LEBANON, ISRAEL AND GAZA

The London Communities Emergencies Partnership (LCEP) has been bringing together voluntary, community and faith sector partners across the city to respond here in London.

Alongside London Plus and the national VCS Emergencies Partnership (VCSEP), they have created this page and resource on guidance for those communities affected.

This is also a reminder that Thrive LDN has available guidance for those affected by the ongoing war in Gaza and Israel including resources for displaced people and crisis situations.

SUPPORTING COMMUNITIES IN THE WAKE OF THE SUMMER RIOTS

The London Communities Emergencies Partnership (LCEP) has pulled together a list of resources to support the voluntary, community and faith sectors due to concerns around recent far-right racist and Islamophobic violence, hate and spreading of disinformation, which you can find at the link.

Hope not Hate also has a bank of resources around the theme of staying safe amidst far-right violence and advice for asylum seekers and refugees, which can be accessed here.

We are bringing these to partners’ attention following the publication of several reports linked to this issue, such as The Case for Community Resilience by Hope not Hate and After the Riots by British Future.

FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

We’d like to take this opportunity to draw your attention to several exciting funding opportunities that are currently available. Trust for London is offering social justice funding for work that fits under their priority areas of ending migrant destitution, racial justice and disability justice. Find out more here.

The National Lottery is looking to fund projects and organisations that work to make positive changes in their community. Offering funding for short or long-term projects starting at £20,001, they’re looking to fund projects or organisations that aim to bring people together to build strong relationships in and across communities, improve the places and spaces that matter to communities, and help more people to reach their potential by supporting them at the earliest possible stage. Read more and apply here.
